A group of senior services specialists representing SSPA met with West University residents yesterday in an open forum to discuss aging issues.

Susan Farnsworth, with Susan’s Concierge for Seniors, opened the panel discussion with a brief history of why she started her business five years ago. She stated that when her mother developed Alzheimer’s, Susan wanted to improve the quality of her mother’s life by taking her on outings to keep her engaged and socially active. As Susan could not find a company willing to do this, she started one herself.

Contributing her expertise in the senior housing industry, Dianne Cooper, who works with Belmont Village, gave the attendees an overview of assisted living facilities, independent living and skilled care options. Dianne reminded everyone that Belmont Village offers a respite program for family caregivers who are going on vacation, have their own health issues or may just need a break.

Katie Thompson with Keller Williams brings many years of real estate expertise to the table. Along with understanding the complex market issues, she adds a designation as a Senior Real Estate Specialist to her vast resume. This means that  Katie also understands the need for making modifications to family residences family members they do not want to relocate. She is a source of referrals to builders and contractors who understand the growing needs of the senior community.

In addition, Susan Davis, owner of Innovative Nurses & Sitters and a West University resident, was able to provide some guidelines to the attendees for care in the home, whether it is from Medicare reimbursed home health agencies or from licensed non-medical home care agencies. Innovative has been providing caregivers for over 20 years to individuals in the greater Houston area.

Those attending the forum posed excellent questions on respite care requirements, hospitalization and home health care, senior legal specialists and safety issues.  For more information on upcoming forums on issues facing seniors and new options for their care, contact Senior Services Professional Alliance at 713.302.2192 or West University Senior Services at 713.662.5895.
